First, study the double navigation bar at the top of the page, just below the page banner - they are repeated again at the end of this page, but in most pages you will find them EITHER at the top of the page, OR at the bottom, depending upon the way in which the particular page has been laid out.

BLUE TABS are internal links to sections or pages within this site - BROWN TABS are links to other sites, a bit like the tourist site signposts you see around the country's roads!

Now, work your way carefully down the explanation notes below - and don't forget that there is also a "Tutorial" page, which is also the SITE MAP, in which there is a very clear graphic guide to what some of the main links lead to.

You can click on each of the enlarged sample link tags, to look at the page the real one will take you to, but you will have to use your browser's BACK button to return here.

NAVIGATION TAB   DESCRIPTION OF TAB DESTINATION & FUNCTION

Exactly what it says - this is the page that our main Internet URL (ie: www.portsmouthnowandthen.com) takes visitors to. Clicking on the main cameo image takes you into the first of the "Welcome" pages and you may like to bookmark that, rather than the Title Page, for future visits.

In effect, this is the first page in the website. It sets out to introduce visitors to what we are trying to do here, and also directs them to the pages where they can learn how to get the best out of the site.

The second and third pages also deal with reader contributions and how other people canhelp us continue to improve this little corner of the world wide web.

The MAIN INDEX page is exactly what it says - it's a page on which you will find all the other important sectional links, set out as clear explanatory panel images.

By clicking on those, plus some "random" other links to pages of specific interest, you can effectively reach just about everywhere within this site.

This is primarily a graphic representation of the page you go to when you click on the MAIN INDEX tab, but it's in the form of a "tree", which gives you a better idea of where all the link panels in the page will take you. We are also adding graphics of other main links to this page, but that part is still an ongoing project, as we add pages and tinker with and fine tune various sections.

This tab link takes you to a page that is an index for all the various galleries we have in this site that are "general", or common to more than one or two of the "regional" gallery sections, or that are of importance to the whole of Portsmouth, rather than just (say) North End, Stamshaw and Tipner, or perhaps (say) Southsea and Eastney. You'll get the idea when you start using the links.

This tab links to a section which is what it says - a "Brief History of Portsmouth", set out in chronological order, there are several pages that outline the main years and events in Portsmouth's evolution, with links to some of the more detailed galleries and feature pages appropriate for those events, where applicable. Use these pages to get a quick idea of what to expect elsewhere in the site ...

This will take you to the title page of one of our largest features (at present) in the website. It is the story of Lord Nelson, his career, his life, his loves and includes also a detailed account of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Britain's greatest naval hero.

Each page has detailed links to the other pages within the section.

This is the Editor's regular BLOG SPOT, in which you can keep track of the latest additions and alterations to the site, often with a quick link in the text, so you can have an immediate look-see.

The link should always take you to the most recent Blog entries, and at the foot of that page will be a link to earlier ones.

Pretty much self-explanatory, this one. The link takes you to the Contact Page, where you will find details of our full postal address, our telephone numbers, our e-mail address, and how to go about arranging to visit us in person.

We love it when people sign our Guest Book and leave little comments - it lets us know that you really are out there, taking an interest in what we're doing. However, for the moment, your message won't appear immediately, as we have to "screen" entries to prevent "unwanted" postings - however, entries will usually appear within 24 hours.

This started as a bit of light-hearted fun - but now we've got people asking for more!

The link goes to the Home Page of the Quiz Corner, from which you can access a series of history and nostalgia quizzes, which you can play for fun, or copy off and use down your local pub!

This is a work still in progress, an interactive map of the area, with key tourist attraction and historical landmarks displayed. When you hover your mouse over these sites, a pop-up will give to more information, and a click will take you either to the appropriate page within this site, or to the dedicated website of the particular attraction - for instance, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

These are the links to external sites of interest, which we think you will (a) find useful and (b) thoroughly enjoy. They should open in a fresh browser window.

If your browser is set to block "Pop-Ups", you may have to hold down your "Ctrl" button whilst you click on each of these links, as some systems treat them as if they were pop-ups themselves. Try clicking on this link and you should find yourself in the fantastic Portsmouth Oubs site - more than well worth the visit, too!
