Portsmouth History - hundreds of pages dedicated to the history of Britain's most historic naval port and city, all free access for everyone to enjoy. Possibly fast becoming the most comprehensive Portsmouth History site on the web.

LATEST NEWS - AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF INACTIVITY (DUE TO WORK PRESSURES) WE'RE NOW ON THE MOVE AGAIN, AND THERE IS A NEW BLOG ENTRY, DETAILING SOME OF WHAT IS TO COME, AVAILABLE ON THE EDITOR'S BLOG SPOT - JUST CLICK ON THE PANEL TO THE RIGHT, ABOVE THIS NOTICE.

Portsmouth, set on the south coast of England, has been Britain's premier naval port for almost a thousand years and has a fantastic and varied history, which dates from even earlier. Our aim is to build a site here that gives you everything you ever wanted to know about our great city under one Internet "roof" - and, with your help and support, we are confident we will succeed, sooner rather than later.

There are other Portsmouth web sites out there, but we are working to make this the most comprehensive resource for our city; where we can improve on existing sites, that is what we will try to do - where there are "specialist" sites that would be almost impossible to improve on, we will simply include a link to them, with suitable editorial introductory notes.

One of our greatest challenges is to make this site easy to navigate - there's no point in having all this wonderful content in here if none of you can find it. To that end, we have made some recent changes (this welcome page included), some of which are based on suggestions made by our visitors.

Use the link on the top right of this page, for what we hope will be a clear explanation of how all our links and index pages work. It will be well worth your while spending a few minutes reading through it, even if you are a returning visitor.

You can also click on the link immediately below, to continue reading more of this introduction section, where we attempt to explain just why we think Portsmouth needs "another" new website (don't worry, the link on the top right will appear in the next few pages, too), or you can return to this page by using the "WELCOME" tag on any of the page navigation bars and finish reading this section later.

What the link tabs on the navigation bars you will find at the top/bottom of our pages are for
This feature is not necessarily just for first time visitors - we are steadily trying to improve the look and content of this site, which will mean some ongoing changes to the way this site works best.
However, we hope that the navigation bars are fairly self-explanatory - but we do recommend you to start from the MAIN INDEX tab and visit the the SITE MAP page, which shows a graphic of the best routes to take from there ...
